Naijaexpression: BRIT Awards 2016: Adele Publicly Supports Kesha As She Picks Up Four Awards
Last night’s BRIT Awards (February 24) truly were Adele’s awards, with the singing superstar picking up an impressive four awards - Global Success, British Female Solo Artist, British Single (for Hello) and Mastercard’s Album of the Year (for 25).
As well as thanking all the usual people in her acceptance speeches, Adele also used the very public platform to share her support for Kesha, who is currently going through a legal battle with Dr Luke.
On Friday, Kesha was denied an injunction which would allow her to record outside of her contract with Dr Luke’s label with Sony, alleging that he drugged her and ‘sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally’ abused her.
Picking up her Best British Female Solo Artist award, her first award of the night, Adele said: “Thank you so much. To come back after so long away and be so warmly received is really lovely, thank you so much.
“To the other girls that are nominated, thank you for letting me be in your company, you’re all incredible and it’s a privilege to be alongside you. I’d like to thank my management and record label for embracing the fact that I’m a woman and being encouraged by it.
“I’d also like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha. Thank you very much.”
Later in the night, Adele got emotional as Major Tim Peake presented her with her Global Success award from the International Space Station, with the singer saying (in a wrongly bleeped speech): “Thank you, I can’t work out if I’m crying because of that video or because Tim Peake did it. My kid is going to think I’m so cool.
“That was really amazing. You’re getting f**king bored of me. I honestly can’t tell you, I said it earlier, to come back, I got really lost for a while and I didn’t know if I’d ever come back and for you all to be so kind to me is so nice.”
She added: “Not bad for a girl from Tottenham that don’t like flying, getting global success! And Tim Peake, I love you, good luck! I hope you’re OK and not too hungry. Bye.”
Adele, who closed the show, also made sure to thank boyfriend Simon Konecki for all his support, saying as she picked up her Album of the Year award: “I also want to give a massive thank you, I’m going to embarrass you I’m sorry, to my boyfriend.
